A True High Quality Product
When you look for a custom piece for your home, you want to ensure you’re getting a product that’s not only durable, but will stand up to the test of time (along with the many different outdoor elements). At Pacific Gate Works we make our high quality gates from western red cedar. Western red cedar is known as one of the most durable of woods, and is a great choice for anyone looking for an outdoor gate that will last for many years to come.
Kiln Dried For a Superior Product
All of our gates at Pacific Gate Works are handcrafted with clear grade, kiln dried, Western Red Cedar. Kiln drying is a superior process where the timber dries uniformly and to a precise moisture content which minimizes expansion and contraction over time. This process also drives most of the water out of the cedar, creating a lighter product.
There are several grades of cedar, but we specify a custom grade lumber, giving you the highest quality product. Within its fibers naturally-occurring chemical compounds give it unique preservative qualities. It’s resistant to rot and decay, and has tight growth rings that give the wood extra durability. You’ll notice a tight, vertical grain on all our wood, which has little to no knots. Vertical grain also holds its shape well as it minimally expands and contracts; therefore, you won’t have to worry about warp or bending of the wood over time.
Not only is Western Red Cedar durable and naturally beautiful, it also stains more evenly, giving it a clean and elegant look. Visit our stain page to learn more about the stain we recommend, and how you can get your gate stained by professionals in our shop.
Anatomy of PGW Gates
Our gates aren’t simply wood and nails/screws. Because we put a lot of pride into our products, we make sure we craft them using techniques that are known to last.
The stiles and rails of our gates are assembled with mortise and tenon joinery. Mortise and tenon joinery is a time-tested joint that’s been around for thousands of years. This is arguably the strongest joint in woodworking, providing superior strength and longevity to your gate.
The tongue and groove panels float within the stiles and rails framework. This reduces stress at the frame joints during weather changes.
There are no screws or fasteners in any of our gates, making them more durable over time. Adding screws or nails does not add strength, nor do they look good. The joinery of our gates is arguably the strongest, and superior to any fasteners.
There are weep holes in the bottom of the gate to help with rain drainage. Without these weep holes water can build up, causing the wood to rot. The weep hole system is a very important detail we provide on all our gates that helps with the rain.
Local, hand-crafted unique outdoor gates
Every piece of our lumber is hand selected and toned match, making your gate beautiful and one-of-a-kind. Even more important, our lumber is locally sourced, proudly Made in the USA! When you choose a Pacific Gate Works outdoor gate, you’re choosing a product that is handmade by craftsman intent on providing the highest quality western red cedar gate you can find.
